16 March 2010

The South Australian Judo Academy sent a young and enthusiastic team to compete in the South Australian State Judo Titles – held in Port Augusta on March 13 2010.

Of the 10 athletes representing SAJA, the academy returned with 16 medals – 12 of which were gold.

Youngsters Ashleigh Stevens and Vita Milojkovic started the campaign with very creditable wins in the junior girls divisions – signs that the clubs junior development program is in safe hands.

SASI Talent Scholarship holder Courtney Barks performed well, claiming gold in the -57kg Cadet Division (under 17 years).

Leah Uncle was again impressive.  In only her second tournament in a higher weight category she has fought with passion to win two gold medals (u/20 years & open age).

Ross Merrett showed why he is a red hot favourite to represent Australia at the Cadet & Junior World Championships later this year. With impressive skill and athletic ability he dominated strongly to claim gold medals in three age categories, including the Senior Men’s division (-66kg).

SASI High Performance athlete and 2008 Olympian Steve Brown took gold in the under 73kg division as he looks to retain his Australian #1 ranking in the lead up to the World Championships to be held in Tokyo in September.

SASI Talent Scholarship holder Will Jenkins was impressive winning a silver medal in the same division and is looking set to further improve his Australian ranking of #5 over the coming months.

The Academy is now preparing for the Queensland International Open – being held on March 27-28 in Brisbane.

Gold medals also won by Michael Barks (-55kg), Miha Milojkovic (-100kg) & Silver medal won by Tilen Milojkovic (-66kg)
